Description
Hibiscus Sabdariffa (Roselle) is a species of Hibiscus native in West Africa. It is used for the production of infusion/tea called carcade (also Karkade). Other use: the dried calyxes are used to make jelly, jam, sauce, syrup, ice cream etc.
Hibiscus is easily one of the commonest herbs in Ghana. Its local name is Sobolo and you will find it in almost every marketplace. Hibiscus flowers produce a refreshing red tea which is mostly served chilled but can also be enjoyed as a warm brew. To prepare Hibiscus tea, add one teaspoon of dried hibiscus flowers to 250 ml of boiling water. You can add spices such as cloves, ginger and sweeteners like honey. Strain and enjoy either warm or chilled.
It is rich in polyphenoles, anti-oxidants, vitamin C, K, copper, calcium, potassium and magnesium.
Health benefits: reduction of blood pressure and blood sugar, lowering of cholesterol, boost of immune system, rich in anti-oxidants. The presence of melatonin will help to promote good sleep.
